The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland partnered with Katie Sewell's tenth grade class at the Mastery School (part of Hawken School) on their first challenge project of the year. Six groups of students researched the impact of Artificial Intelligence on civic life, specifically voter engagement. They considered mis- and dis-information, deep fakes, AI generated robocalls and more. Each of the groups created a plan for countering the negative impact of AI on voting, such as discouraging voting, giving out false information about polling locations and dates, and creating and distributing false and misleading videos. The projects ranged from workshops to a social media campaign to an educational video for the LWVGC website. We will probably implement at least one, if not more, of their proposals.
The League presented the class with a Defending Democracy Award. According to their teacher, Katie Sewell, the award, "made their year." Thank you, Mastery School!
