Prepare to Vote


Am I eligible to vote?

To vote in Ohio, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen

  • At least 18 years old on or before the day of the general election. (17-year-olds who will turn 18 by the date of the general election may vote in the primary election for candidates only);

  • resident of Ohio for at least 30 days immediately before the election; and

  • Registered to vote at least 30 days before the election.

In addition, eligible voters must not:

  • Be currently incarcerated for a felony conviction.

  • Have been declared incompetent for voting purposes by a court.

  • Have been permanently disenfranchised for violations of election laws.

You will be asked for your first and last name and the county you live in. If you cannot find your name or think there is an error, contact your county Board of Elections office using the link provided on the Voter Search page.

If you have recently moved to Ohio, you must file a new voter registration form.


How do I register to vote for the first time or update my registration information?

  • Online with the Ohio Secretary of State (Use link button below)
  • In person at the Bureau of Mover Vehicles
  • Pick up a hard copy voter registration form at your local library, high school, city or county clerk’s office, or public assistance office.
  • Request a hard copy voter registration form over the phone from your board of elections (see link below for the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections)
  • Use the form provided at the links below:
