Women’s History Day Program—Women in Elected Office in Ohio
About this event
Join us for this LWVGC Women's History Day program! Despite the fact that women are registered to vote in higher numbers than men, the number of women in elected positions in Ohio is historically low. This program will explore the reasons behind this trend and share some ideas for how to increase the number of women running for and winning elected office.
One hundred years ago, Ohio was at the forefront of women’s representation and for decades Ohio was considered the bellwether for American elections. Where does the state stand now?
Speakers:
- Barbara Palmer - Executive Director, Center for Women & Politics of Ohio, Baldwin Wallace University
- Fizz White - Deputy Director of Mission Programs & Communications, The Matriots
Barbara Palmer will talk about her recent research on the number of women running in Ohio at the county, state, and national level and historical trends in the representation of women in public office in Ohio. Fizz White will add the perspective from female candidates' actual experiences on the campaign trail and in seeking votes. The Matriots is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing women’s equal participation in all aspects of political life. It was founded in 2017 by Ohio women in response to the significant underrepresentation of women in Ohio politics.
This free program will take place on Saturday, March 22, in the Sari Feldman Auditorium of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma-Snow Branch (2121 Snow Road in Parma). Open to the public. Bring a friend!
