Subject: Heights Chapter E-News - Are you available on Tuesday? and life beyond Tuesday
From: Wendy Deuring

THIS IS IT!

THE TIME IS NOW!

JAW FIRM.  BACK STRAIGHT.

EYES TO THE FUTURE.
Heights Chapter E-News
Are you available on Tuesday?
Plus things to look forward to AFTER Tuesday

Events
  • Tuesday, November 5th - Election Day.  Go to Polling Places with Vote Yes on 1 Signs  (see below)
  • Sunday, November 10th - City Council Observers Report, University Hts Library, 2-4:00
  • Sunday, November 17th - Orientation for new members (and anyone who still feels new) - Noble Road Library, 2:15-3:45

One Last Chance - Tuesday is it!

Citizens/Not Politicians is looking for people to go to polling locations, either to leave a Vote Yes on 1 yard sign in the ground or, preferably, to stand outside and try to talk to voters as they are going in to vote (or talk to them when they come running out to ask after they read the ballot and said "huh?") A list has been compiled of the larger, more needed polling locations around Greater Cleveland.  Since most of the people in the Heights are generally well informed, the push is for you to choose a polling location in another part of town.

If you have a yard sign, pull it out of the ground and take it with you.  If you have a yard sign but aren't able to go out, can someone else use your sign?  Let me know.  I can serve as the clearing house.  For starters I have two yard signs which I will be unable to use as I will be a pollworker that day. Let me know if you want a yard sign - 216-392-6926.

Guidance re. standing at a polling location: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mC1hDtDdU-wR9DKRjKeRKowEVYvmICXnsso10y2hrYg/edit?tab=t.0  Practice your line - you will only have a moment to get people's attention.  The main points are that the ballot language does not reflect the actual amendment, and that a yes vote ends gerrymandering.  I mostly told people at early voting to "vote yes on 1 - the ballot language is confusing."

And here is the list of polling locations.  Clearly people are signing up to just put a sign in the ground as they have signed up at multiple locations.  If you want to go to a place but someone has already signed up, you might still want to go and talk to voters in addition to the sign in the ground.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mRcLUDy_5Z_-n62JCXNJhQNOLOnBhgGRQcWgegapBDs/edit?gid=0#gid=0
To Recycle Yard Signs After Tuesday

The Cleveland Heights Green Team in partnership with the Heights Libraries and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes will be collecting yard signs from November 5 (at 9 am) through November 24. The signs will be transported to the Cuyahoga Solid Waste District, where arrangements will be made for their recycling.  [Yard signs that are put in medians and empty lots are often not collected. If you have the time feel free to help clean up the neighborhood and get more of the signs into recycling. ]

COME HEAR THE INSIDER SCOOP ON CITY COUNCILS
Sunday, November 10th from 2-4:00, University Hts. Library

We will meet once again to get the insider details on the city council meetings for both communities - all the details that end up on the cutting room floor before publication in the Heights Observer.  Our observers diligently sit through all the regular meetings and quite a few of the special meetings, so they are the people who are in the know.

We will meet from 2-4:00.  And since this is a mere 5 days after the election, it seems a good time to gather with like-minded citizens to discuss governance.

NEW (and not so new) MEMBER ORIENTATION
Sunday, November 17th 2:15-3:45 Noble Branch Library

Sometimes a new member comes along and points out the obvious - why are we not offering orientations for our new members?  Good question.

Thanks to Janice Foster, Judith Beeler and Betsy Tracy, we are now going to do exactly that.  People who joined in 2024 will be contacted directly with the details.  The program will include an overview of League, more specific information on our Voter Registration, Voter Forums, and our Observer Corp, plus other ways to get involved.

And better yet, we will be meeting in the BRAND NEW Noble Library Branch - 2800 Noble Road, about halfway between Mayfield and Monticello.

(If you joined before 2024 and are still feeling adrift in the League, you may also come to the program.  Just let me know by replying to this email.  We need to be sure to not exceed the room capacity.)

MEMBERSHIP ROSTER IS IN THE WORKS

By popular demand, we will be sending out a chapter membership roster shortly, which will include street address, phone and email addresses.  This will be based on your membership information with LWVGC.

IF YOU DON'T WANT SOME, OR ANY, OF YOUR INFORMATION SHARED with your fellow League members, please reply to this newsletter.  You can go to www.lwvgreatercleveland.org, click on the login button on the upper right corner, and then click on Profile to see what information we have for you, or I can send you the information.

An Ask
We are looking for possible homes to host a member social event in January or later.  We need a house that can comfortably accommodate 25-30 guests and has a bathroom on the first floor.  If you would like to offer your home for January (or for a later event), please let us know either by replying to this email or by calling me (Wendy) at 216-392-6926.  Maryann's home is indeed lovely, and probably available, but we would like to share the love with more of our members.   (We don't need seating for everyone - our events are usually a mix of standing and sitting and leaning.)

One member has offered, which is wonderful, but we would like to have a short list depending on availability and such.  If you are worried that your house is not nice enough, I can assure you that, on the whole, League members have other priorities. Like talking about issues.  ;-)
