The Chapter Chat with our Council Observer Corps

The Chapter Chat on our two city councils was enlightening - entertaining even?  as we continued our tour of library branches and met in the University Hts. branch on November 10th.  With major thanks to Maryann Barnes for overseeing our observer corps - recruiting, training, encouraging, and finally editing the reports for final publication.

We heard from Tanis Swan, Marilyn Singer and Leah Davydov who observe the University Hts. Council Meetings.  There is much happening in University Hts, which you know if you read the Sun Press or the Jewish News (or our reports in the Heights Observer!) but for me the most exciting news was that the city's finances are finally in order once again and the city has been praised for it's financial reporting.  Progress!

We then heard from Blanche Valancy and Jill Tatem who observe Cleveland Hts. Council.  One of their reported items is that Cleveland Hts. is now having trouble retaining their finance directors, maintaining a level of equilibrium I suppose.

TO READ THEIR SUMMARIES which were presented at the meeting on the 10th go to  www.lwvgreatercleveland.org Click on Chapters on the upper tool bar and scroll down to our page.  Right below Recent Chapter Events  you will see "Chapter Chats - November 10th" where you will see the reports for the two cities.

If you're interested in being an observer, on the website just above Recent Chapter Events is a button to click on if you want to become an observer.

And if you want easy access to the full  monthly observer reports which are not constrained by the word limit of the Heights Observer, you can go to the bottom of the newsletter where you will find a link to the observer reports online.

New (and not so new) Member Orientation deemed a success!

We held our first orientation for new (and not so new) members at the brand new Noble Branch Library on Sunday, November 17th.  We had new and not so new members heard about the League's overall structure, and the various things we do, like the observer corp, voter registration, voter forums, and the Voter's Guide.  We were apparently persuasive enough that one of our very newest members attended the city council meeting the following evening to see what the observers do.  How's that for taking action!

The program was recorded and has now been posted on our chapter home page.  If you're interested in watching the presentations you can go to www.lwvgreatercleveland.org.  You'll need to log in as a member so click in the upper right corner where it says Member Login.  (If you haven't set up your login yet, you'll get a chance to do it now.)  Then, in the top menu bar click on "Chapters" (just to the left of "About Us") and scroll down to "Cleve Hts/Univ Hts. . Then scroll down on our page past the calendar and the Observer Corp (tho you might get caught up in checking out the observer corp details, just like when we go to look up a recipe online and 2 hours later we remember what we had intended to look up, right? )

MAJOR thanks go out to Janice Foster for proposing this idea, and to Betsy Tracy and Judith Beeler for pulling together the MANY details, including compiling a folder of information sheets and promotional materials.  We also heard from Maryann Barnes about the Observers, Carol Spackey about Voter Registration, Blanche Valancy about candidate forums, and Betsy about the Voters Guide.  Janice provided the intro and farewells, and some really excellent snack items.

MEMBERSHIP ROSTER IS IN THE WORKS

A member roster has been compiled and will be made available as soon as we have updated it for 4th quarter members.  With major thanks to Janice Foster for having this idea and for absolutely not giving up on it.   I don't remember when the roster went by the wayside but it's high time we bring it back!

Members Making a Difference  Beyond League!

Meet Joan Spoerl!  Joan is known within our Chapter as Membership Chair,  where her super power is that she seems to know everybody in the community.  And one of the main reasons she knows so many people in the community is that she is the Director of The Literacy Cooperative which runs Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for Cuyahoga County.    The primary tasks of the Literacy Cooperative are to increase enrollment and to raise funds to cover the cost of the books and postage.  Joan has been involved with the organization since 2017.

The Imagination Library sends one book per month to any child between the ages of birth and 5 years, with no income requirements. More than 39,000 children are enrolled in Cuyahoga County (out of 66,000 who are eligible) - one of the largest enrollments in the world.  The cost of the program is approximately $26 per child per year.  If you want more information on The Literacy Cooperative, go to www.literacycooperative.org.

"The number of books in the home is a better indicator of kindergarten readiness than the education level or income of the parents."   How many books did you have as a child?  Do you still have any of them?

Thank you, Joan, for working to improve the lives of so many children here in Cuyahoga County. You're making a difference.

* If you know of a League member who is also doing good work in the community, reply to this email and let me (Wendy) know.

For People who think that Dead People can Vote

I was curious to read the following article in the Plain Dealer about a ballot that was apparently submitted on behalf of someone who died.  It's reassuring to see that there are, in fact, processes in place for checking the voter rolls against the list provided each month of who has died in the County.  This was the one act of voter fraud committed in the November election in Cuyahoga County.  It was found, the ballot was not counted, and the Secretary of State was notified.  This is how elections are handled in Cuyahoga County (and, from personal experience, I can say that Lake County follows the same process.)

Instead of Inspiration, I close with a giggle - something you can share if conversation lags during the holiday festivities!
