In This Message - Annual Meeting and so much more...

Annual Meeting

Despite cold weather and a late venue change, the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland held an energetic and informative Annual Meeting on May 31. Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne was our keynote speaker. Here are some of the highlights:

* We elected new board members and approved a new dues structure mandated by LWVUS.
* New board members are: Dawn Ellis, co-president; Valerie Gamertsfelder, vice-president; Janice Foster, membership; Nadia Zaiem, chapter liaison.
* Topics such as fair elections, voter services, membership changes, and future advocacy issues were discussed.

Members asked questions and made suggestions to the board. Some of these  included: have a planning/strategy meeting to communicate better and achieve our goals, and to engage members more effectively; hire a part time employee to help handle administrative duties; let anyone on the Outreach team know if your chapter wants to tell the rest of LWVGC what your chapter has accomplished; call out for volunteers to help with Vote411 and County Council observers.

Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne - priorities and progress

It was a privilege to hear Chris Ronayne's insights, experiences, and goals at Annual Meeting. His governing philosophy for Cuyahoga County is based on creating a Healthy community, founded on the pillars of creating and fostering a healthy economy, climate, government, and fiscal standing. He gave an example of how the county is meeting these goals by telling the story of two children, ages fourteen and six years, who were dropped off at the Jane Edna Hunter Social Services Center two weeks apart, because they had no where else to go. The fourteen year old was taken from an emergency room and dropped off at the center  - with no provisions for where she would sleep. A bed was arranged, but the same thing   happened two weeks later - with the six year old. At that point plans were made to create a safe, monitored temporary housing campus. The  Centers' H.O.P.E.  Campus, a 58 unit facility with on site nurses and support services, was created and is now operating on Lorain Ave.
