THIS Wednesday, 6-8:00, 3133 Fairfax Road, Potluck

We will be meeting at Amy Vegh's home - 3133 Fairfax Road - at 6:00 pm on WEDNESDAY, June 11th for a potluck dinner, some business, and a guest speaker.  You can park on the streets or, if you prefer, in the nearby Fairfax Elementary School parking lot.

Jodi Sourini, member of the CH-UH School Board, will speak at 6:45 pm on The Board of Education: What It's Like to be in the Room Where it Happens"

Please note that we must still find someone to chair the nominating committee.  We have two very capable people serving on the committee, including Eef who has now chaired it twice and will be there to help explain the process, but we need someone to step up to lead the process.  The Nominating Committee doesn't start until next February and is generally done by the end of April so it is a limited time obligation.  If this seems like a way for you to help the League, please either reply to this email or be prepared at our Annual Meeting on June 10th to volunteer.
And this is a POTLUCK MEAL  So far Amy is providing wine, so that's good.  If you are attending (and why would you possibly not? ;-)  ) please let us know by replying to this newsletter, or emailing us at Heights@lwvgreatercleveland.org and letting us know you're coming and what you'll be bringing.
Schedule:  Dinner 6-6:45;  Speaker 6:45-7:15; Business Meeting 7:15-8:00
2025-26 Heights Proposed Budget
2025-26 Heights Nominating Committee Report

We gathered together at CLEUrban Winery to watch HBO's "Dark Money Game: Ohio Confidential" - the story of Ohio's HB6 and the corruption that fueled and benefitted from this piece of legislation.  Major thanks to Kathiann Kowalski, a journalist, researcher, and lawyer who has spent much of her life reporting on energy, science and policy issues, who provided opening comments.
And major thanks to Destiny who allowed us free access to the room.  We were assured that we spent enough that evening on beverages and crudite plates to make it worthwhile to the CLE Urban Winery.  They are such an asset to the community.
Major thanks to Linda Striefsky who provided tech support (and the projector that we used to project the program to the screen.)  If you don't have access to HBO maybe some of y'all can arrange a watch party at home.  It was absolutely worth seeing, even as we continue to bear the actual costs of HB6.
Keep bringing your ideas Robin, and anyone else who sees a way that we can learn, and teach, and have an impact.

The weather on Memorial Day was absolutely parade-perfect!  And we had 12 of us out marching  - we were definitely a presence.
Marchers included Brenda Bagby, Natalie Barrett, Leah Davydov,  Emily Gregory, Susie Kaeser, Monica Gordon Pershey, Carol Spackey, Joan Spoerl, Linda Tobin, Steven Pepper, Amy Vegh, and Wendy Deuring.  MAJOR thanks to Robin Lieberman who remade our banner, and to Blanche Valancy and Eefje Kolkman who staffed a table at the festival.  And of course we had Jack Valancy who diligently photographed all the participants in the parade.
And major thanks to Leah who brought her daughter along to serve as our youngest suffragette, complete with a long skirt, white blouse, and a sash.  She had a bit of difficulty keeping the sash in place but she was a most enthusiastic parade participant.
And as Susie Kaeser said, it was really good to be there.  I felt a sense of community.  We don't often see so many of each other - the people who share this space.  And we all got to share an experience.   She's right.  Go out of your house and find the community. It's out there.

We bagged the LWVO Convention Auction!

The quilted bag, which was designed and made by Jill Tatem, Judith Beeler, and Wendy Deuring was heavily bid on by a number of people and, I am proud to say, sold for $75.00!   Sadly, our own Betsy Tracy was the penultimate bidder.  Maybe we can give some thought to something for the Ohio convention in two years - a quilt perhaps?  How many of us are creative?

Heights Democracy Day Lives On
Some years back the Cleveland Hts. Council passed legislation pledging to hold a Democracy Day observance each year until Citizens United has been overturned.  The event is open to members of the community (and beyond) to raise concerns about how democracy is being weakened by money and other negative influencers.  This year's speakers addressed, among other things,  climate change, the weakening of the media, and the impact of billionaires.  I spoke on the now obvious impact of money on our democracy at both the national and state levels.  My comments are attached below.

If you ever get the chance to attend, I recommend it. It's a moving reminder of what matters.

CH Democracy Day 2025

A Series of Lessons - Ten Steps to Revolution by Heather Cox Richardson
Heather Cox Richardson, noted Historian,  has just released a series of videos to help teach people our vital history.  In her words:
"The hard lessons of history seem to be repeating themselves in the U.S. these days, and with the nation’s 250th anniversary approaching, some friends and I got to talking about how we could make our real history more accessible.

After a lot of brainstorming and a lot of help—and an incredibly well timed message from a former student who has become a videographer—we have come up with Journey to American Democracy: a series of short videos about American history that we will release on my YouTube channel, Facebook, and Instagram. They will be either short explainers about something in the news or what we are releasing tonight: a set of videos that can be viewed individually or can be watched together to simulate a survey course about an important event or issue in American history.

Journey to American Democracy explores how democracy has always required blood and sweat and inspiration to overcome the efforts of those who would deny equality to their neighbors. It examines how, for more than two centuries, ordinary people have worked to make the principles the founders articulated in the Declaration of Independence the law of the land.

Those principles establish that we have a right to be treated equally before the law, to have a say in our government, and to have equal access to resources."

Bill of Obligations - The 10 Habits of Good Citizens

Have you thought about contacting the US Supreme Court?

I recently wrote postcards to the Supreme Court justices regarding their ruling on immunity, and shortly afterward saw that The Card Campaign group has put together a template to print out postcards to the Supreme Court.  If you can print two-sided onto card stock then you can use this template to create postcards.  Otherwise, you can use it as suggested text to write your own postcards to members of the Supreme Court.   I also see that the template is simply addressed to "The Nine Honorable Justices" whereas I directed mine to each of the justices and varied my text based on their vote.

The Board of Elections has moved!

In case you missed the news, our Cuyahoga County Board of Elections has moved a bit further west and north to
the former Plain Dealer Building - 1803 Superior Avenue.
For those of you who have been in the current building at 30th and Euclid, you will probably agree this is a good move.

MEMBERSHIP ROSTER IS HERE!

Going forward the directory will be updated quarterly and posted to our chapter's website at www.lwvgreatercleveland.org (and emailed to new members.)  But here is your first (in a very VERY long time) member directory.  With major credit to Janice Foster who just couldn't believe we didn't have such a thing.  Thank you Janice!

All the goodness and the heroisms will rise up again, then be cut down again, and rise up.
It isn't that the evil thing wins - it never will - but that it doesn't die.  John Steinbeck
