Good Trouble Day
We celebrated Good Trouble Day on Thursday, July 17, by reading excerpts of and discussing the graphic memoir March, about the late John Lewis' struggles for civil rights. Candace Martin, LWVGC's Advocacy Director, organized the event held at Mac's Backs Books on Coventry in Cleveland Heights.
Participants shared their stories about growing up in the segregated south, or knowing people who had been harmed by discrimination. We also learned about the lunch counter protests that were designed as peaceful protests against segregated eating facilities. The protests were always done respectfully. Everyone left silently when asked to leave the lunch counter.
The evening had lighter moments, such as when we learned that Lewis always wanted to be a preacher. As a boy he preached to his chickens on the family farm! Beats elocution lessons.
