IF WE ASK CANDIDATES TO SHOW UP, THEN SO SHOULD WE

We hear more and more that candidates are refusing to show up for forums, refusing to submit answers to questions, refusing to seek endorsements from newspapers.  We forget how remarkably fortunate we are that our candidates continue to show up - because they trust us.  At our forums last fall absolutely every candidate was there.  At the Congressional District 7 forum last week all 8 candidates were there.

Last night Sen. Kent Smith and his challenger,  Delores Gray Ford, were there.
Unfortunately, there were ZERO people in the audience.  (Well, there was one spouse of a volunteer, and 3 people with Ms. Ford, but....)

I understand that Friday night was problematic for some, and the location was - well - different?, and there wasn't enough publicity clearly, but seriously!  We ask the candidates to accept their obligation - we need to also accept ours.

After MUCH effort by multiple people, we finally made our way through to Shontel Brown and she has accepted our invitation to attend Monday night's forum along with her two challengers (who had accepted immediately.)

PLEASE do not let them walk into an empty room.

- Monday, April 14 - Candidate Forum for the 11th Congressional District  7:30 pm.
Darl Center for the Arts - 5437 Broadway, Cleveland  44127
There are three candidates - Sean Freeman, Ardelia Holmes, and Shontel Brown.

Please  Register!  and if you don't pre-register, come anyway.  I think the concern was that the hall was on the small side.  I'm not worried about that now.

If you are worried about going to Slavic Village, I would say the risk is low.  I've gone to events along Broadway multiple times, including twice now to the Darl Center.  Blanche has also been there.  Work is being done to bring back Slavic Village.  Be part of that rebirth, see a phenomenal building, and - most importantly - show the candidates the respect they deserve by showing up.  Showing up matters.  (There is a parking lot next to one building north of the Darl, street parking, and there is a lot on 55th and Doloff by Our Lady of Lourdes.

And bring along a friend, or neighbor, or family member.  Want to ride-share with someone but don't know anyone to call?  We do include our member roster in the newsletter including phone numbers.  Find someone you know, or someone who lives near you, and talk them into going with you.  Crazy, I know, but give it a shot  ;-)

This remains a somewhat manual process since the switch to paying memberships through LWVUS, so please make sure you are included in this roster if you are a Heights member (the newsletter does go out to a few people who are not in our chapter), and please make sure the details are correct.  At this point we only have cellphone numbers so if you entered your phone number in the home phone box we can't see it currently.  If your phone number is not listed, and you would like it to be, please, click HERE and let me know what needs to be updated/added/deleted.

Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. - John Lewis

No one can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all their accomplices.  Edward R Murrow, Journalist

The best portion of a good man's life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love. -William Wordsworth, poet (7 Apr 1770-1850)

All the goodness and the heroisms will rise up again, then be cut down again, and rise up.
It isn't that the evil thing wins - it never will - but that it doesn't die.  John Steinbeck

An inspiration from Martin Luther King (per Maya Wiley):
A man cannot be ridden if his back is not bent.

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.
Thomas Jefferson

"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've got to want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say: You want free speech?  Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as a land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now, show me that.  Defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free."   The American President
