Annual Meeting and More

12th Annual Meeting

The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland held it 12th Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 16 at the City Club. Lisa Cech made her last official presentation as senior co-president (thank you Lisa!) and handed the gavel to our new senior co-president Dawn Ellis.  The first order of business was discussing and voting on the 2026-2027 Budget(s), slate of officers  and Program. All issues, after discussion, were approved.

Next, Cheryl Lindsay, our new Membership Director, gave a presentation on strategy for LWVGC going forward. Cheryl and Alice Allen headed up a strategic planning committee. Over the course of several months they conducted interviews with Board members, chapter chairs and members of the Nominating Committee. Below is a summary of Cheryl Lindsay's presentation.

Five areas of concern were addressed by the Strategic Planning Committee. These revolve around making the mission of LWVGC clear and actionable. Training new board members and increasing collaboration between chapters and Greater Cleveland are two of the main goals. The committee will conclude their work this summer and will prepare and distribute a detailed proposal with strategies and smart goals.

Finally, we were honored to host Mayor Justin Bibb as our keynote speaker. Mayor Bibb spoke at length about the Midline Project in the Central and Fairfax neighborhoods. 350 acres of brownfields are being rehabilitated into "shovel ready" property for new business. He anticipates that this development will  bring 2500 high quality jobs to Cleveland's urban core.

Mayor Bibb spoke of the challenges of running a large city under the current national administration. He stressed the importance and success of working with politicians across the aisle. He mentioned a collaboration with the governor and both senators to lower the temperature on the immigration issue in Cleveland.

(I apologize for not having names and chapters of the photos below - I was terrifically jet lagged when I took the pictures.)

Infinite Women Project

Started in 2020, the Infinite Women Project has encompassed a biographical database with more than 10,000 entries worldwide and throughout history. Two recent books may be of interest to members of LWVGC.

Uncredited: Women's Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work
Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra's debut book is an exploration of the ways in which women go uncredited for their work and achievements, both historically and today. The book encompasses research studies, statistics and more than 600 stories from throughout history and around the world, in fields ranging from the sciences to the arts to business to sports.

The View from the Hill: Women Who Made Their Mark After 40
What if being "over the hill" isn't an ending, but a beginning? This book shares the stories of more than 300 women who made their mark on the world in their 40s or later. They come from around the world, across centuries and from all different fields: arts, sciences, business, military and more. Taken together, they challenge the myth that a person's value - particularly a woman's - diminishes as they grow older. Instead, these women prove that many of us only get better with age.

Driving the Vote for Equality

The Mighty Golden Saxon - the Golden Flyer II, is coming to Cleveland this Saturday, May 23, from 1-3 PM at the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Blvd. The Golden Flyer II helped get women the vote and is now touring the country to help pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the US Constitution.
