Show Up

My First Editorial

It seems like a slow news day; it really isn't. Summer is slower - there is less League activity than during the rest of the year.  Beneath the calm there is a lot of activity. The president is slated to speak about the midterms tonight (Thursday, July 16); to what effect no one knows for sure. Candidates are gearing up their campaigns. Elected officials are thinking about tax hikes. Some are thinking about eliminating taxes.

My headline for this email is Show Up. It isn't BE A HERO. It isn't devote forty hours a week to the League (unless you want to.) Just show up, and do it consistently. You can do it many ways. Read my emails; read the emails from the League of Women Voters of Ohio; remind people to check their registration status; write a letter to the editor once a year; share League social media posts to your private accounts. You can do one thing, or you can do many things. You can devote one hour a year to the League, or you can devote one hour a month to the League. You don't have to devote any time to the League - just show up and do something that promotes democracy. Because democracy depends on people showing up.   Thank you, Joan Savitt, Outreach Director

Volunteer Opportunity in Collinwood

The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland needs volunteer on Friday, July 24 to work with the SPOT Youth Empowerment Organization at their Community Block Party being held at 207 E. 161st St., Cleveland, Ohio, 44110 from 3-8 PM.

We have been asked by the SPOT to help run games and serve food for the neighbors attending. Help with games includes running the bubble station for the younger kids and the hula hoop station. Please wear League T-shirts and any wearable swag you have.

As this party is a community building event, we will primarily be serving food and helping with the games rather than registering voters. This event is an opportunity to show up for our neighbors and build trust in the League in communities we haven't reached yet.

Please contact Jacob Vail at jvail@lwvgreatercleveland.org to volunteer. Thank you!

Citizenship in the AI Era

In case you could not attend the live Educational Issue Forum "Citizenship in the AI Era", you can watch it on the LWVGC YouTube channel here.

Speaker Dean Jackson spoke about AI, data centers and voting. AI is projected to have, and is already having, a huge impact on all aspects of our lives. We will need tools to deal with how AI impacts our democracy; this video is a good early step in acquiring those tools.
