Applying for the Legacy Fellowship


                               2024-2025 Academic Year Legacy Fellowship

The League of Women Voters is a national, nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government.

 

The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland, Shaker Heights Chapter (LWVGC-SH) is pleased to offer a Fellowship opportunity for a student of any gender, who is a resident of the Shaker Heights School District and attends a High School in Shaker Heights .

 

The Legacy Fellowship begins on September 15, 2024 and ends in May, 2025 and provides a $1000.00 stipend at the end of the Fellowship year.                                                                                  

 

Legacy fellowship includes many unique opportunities:

·        Become a student member of LWVGC-SH, a multi-generational, voter education organization

·        Engage with the election process on the local and national level

·        Empower voters through grassroots advocacy and information

·        Hands-on experience with nonpartisanship and best practices in a partisan election

·        Experience the impact and value of citizen involvement within the political system

·        Actively serve on the board of directors for the Shaker Chapter of LWVGC

 

The Legacy Fellow can choose to assist with activities such as:

·        Civic engagement within Shaker Heights and the greater Cleveland area

·        Contact with elected officials and community leaders 

·        Social media outreach

·        Distribution of election and voter information

·        Voter registration drives and petition initiatives

·        Forums and panel discussions, including publicity and on-site details

·        Optional opportunity to plan and promote an educational presentation of interest

 

Responsibilities include:

·        Attend Chapter/Board meetings during the fellowship period

·        Volunteer at the Shaker Heights Candidates Forum and the State of the City Forum

·        Observe one Shaker Heights District School Board meeting

·        Attend the Public Officials Gathering sponsored by the Shaker Chapter

·        Become trained to register voters

·        Assist with and publicize a League voter registration drive at your school

·        Serve as an ambassador at your school for the LWV Shaker Chapter

·        Mandatory attendance at the Annual Members Meeting in May

 

Application Process*: Application period May 1 through Friday, August 16, 2024 (at midnight)

·        Complete our digital APPLICATION

·        Include 3 personal or job-related references with contact information

·        Attach a 1-3 paragraph Statement of Interest (if you have a particular project in mind please mention it in your statement)

·        Attach a resume of extra-curricular interests, employment, volunteer involvement, clubs and associations, etc.

·        Interview with the Legacy Selection Committee (Dates TBD end of August/early September)

Shaker Heights Legacy Fellows


The Shaker Heights Chapter of the League of Women Voters Greater Cleveland offers a fellowship opportunity for a motivated student of any gender who is a resident of and attends a high school located within Shaker Heights. The LWV Legacy Fellow learns about the importance of active and informed participation of citizens in government.

The Legacy Fellow assists the Shaker Heights Chapter and gains hands-on experience with:

• Civic engagement

• Voter Services and voter registration drives

• Forums and panel discussions

• Advocacy


Shaker Heights Student Corps

The Student Corps invites students from high schools within Shaker Heights to get involved in the work of the League. You'll find young members helping at events, observing City meetings, and working on projects. Student Corps may also be an opportunity for students to earn service hours and government hours that go toward their high school graduation requirements.

  • Help register voters
  • Distribute vote-by-mail application forms
  • Attend and help organize local candidate and issues forums
  • Write action alert emails/tweets urging voters to contact legislators on issues like voter access
  • Research and take positions on public policy matters and lobby for change
  • Distribute free non-partisan voter guides and publicize vote411.org
  • Attend and help organize local candidate and issues forums
