HomeCitizens Not Politicians Amendment

It’s Time to End Gerrymandering in Ohio. For Good.

2024 Can Be the Year When We Finally Eliminate Politician-Designed Legislative Districts!

Fair Districts CNP signature collection

The League of Women Voters of Ohio (LWVO) has been fighting for decades for fair maps, and the Citizens Not Politicians (CNP) amendment is the best way to finally end gerrymandering in Ohio.

LWVGC will be doing our part by collecting signatures all across the country. The campaign goal is to collect 700,000 signatures from across Ohio between now and June. It's a tall order, and all of us can help.

Our members play a critical role in this part of the campaign. We will spend the next year educating voters about the redistricting process, the danger gerrymandering poses to our democracy, and how we can finally get fair representation in Ohio.

What is the Citizens Not Politicians (CNP) Amendment and why do we need it?

  • The CNP Amendment is a citizen initiative to end gerrymandering. It bans lobbyists and politicians from the redistricting process and instead establishes the Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission, empowering citizens to draw fair districts using an open and transparent process.

  • We need it because Ohio is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country, with voting districts drawn to favor political party interests over the needs of our communities.

    • Our current redistricting process was dragged out for over two years, with maps being ruled unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court a whopping SEVEN times (five times for state legislative maps and twice for congressional ones). This ended up costing Ohio taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, but still didn’t result in fair, impartial districts.

    • We need a new process that takes the power to draw district lines out of the hands of self-interested politicians.

The Citizens Not Politicians Amendment will:

  • Create a 15-member Citizens Commission made up of Democrats, Republicans and Independents who represent the different geographic areas and demographics of Ohio.

  • Ban current or former politicians, political party officials and lobbyists from sitting on the Commission for six years.

  • Require fair and impartial districts by making it unconstitutional to draw maps that favor any political party or individual politician.

  • Require the commission to operate under an open and independent process.

Citizens Not Politicians. Fair Districts. What’s the Difference?

The Citizens Not Politicians (CNP) amendment campaign is led by the Citizens Not Politicians coalition. Fair Districts, a pre-existing coalition of good government groups led by Common Cause Ohio and League of Women Voters of Ohio, is coordinating signature-gathering by volunteers statewide, following the rules set by Citizens Not Politicians.

Fair Districts is a coalition committed to fairer state legislative and congressional maps. It’s a non-partisan team of voting rights experts and organizations working to create a better and more equitable representational democracy. In addition to LWV Ohio and Common Cause Ohio, the coalition includes the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the Ohio Council of Churches, the Ohio Voter Rights Coalition, and more.
